Maintaining Your Mental Wellbeing While Working From Home

With the current COVID-19 situation and the Movement Restriction Order in Malaysia, everyone is encouraged to stay in their homes. Because of that, many people who aren’t used to working remotely are now forced to work from home—and understandably, it can be difficult to concentrate.

Remote work is not for everybody as everyone who works from home has to figure out when to work, where to work, and how to create boundaries between work life and personal life. Adding to that, there are just too many distractions at home.

Here are a few tips on how to work from home:

1. Stick to a consistent schedule

  • Set a routine/schedule and stick to it. This is important because you have to be rather self-disciplined to overcome the temptation of just working whenever you want to. Nonetheless, this is vital for your productivity and helpful for anyone else who’s home with you too. Let them know when they should give you space alone to get your work done.

2. Designate a working space

  • Do not ever work in your bed. It is important to arrange a space at home that solely functions as your working/ office space. Be sure to choose a spot that is comfortable, convenient and where you won’t be disturbed by others to get your work done efficiently.

3. Keep your house neat and tidy

  • Take this time to clean and get rid of any unnecessary clutter around the house! Cleaning is a way of taking control of your life which will make you feel calmer and energized to work.

4. Move around!

  • Be sure to put aside some time to schedule breaks in between working to just move around or even to stand up from your desk. Whether it is to exercise, get water or eat a meal. These activities serve as a break from work and will make you feel refreshed too.

  • Exercising in the morning is good for your mental and physical health and will help you stay focused at work. Don’t forget to get some fresh air from time to time, especially if your job or distractions at home is stressful. Also, take the time to clear your head when needed.
